Collection consists of correspondence, news clippings, photographs, reports, programs, minutes, guidelines, and other materials which document the administration and day-to-day activities of the college. Financial records include: Board of Trustees minutes (1923-1981), Board of Trustees budget correspondence (1930-1931), budgets (1924), financial statements (1934-1935), and grant materials. Also Administrative Council minutes, news clippings, job announcements, memos (1972-1995); master plans; self-study reports, minutes and manual (1966-1995, 4 linear ft.); correspondence pertaining to making St. Philip's College a public junior college for black children (1930); correspondence pertaining to making St. Philip's College a dependent body of the American Church Institute for Negroes (1930-1933); and St. Philip's College Name the Buildings Committee report (1995). Additional materials include: correspondence (1898-1942); scrapbooks of college related news clippings and photographs (1948-1980); news clippings pertaining to the college and black education (1950-1951, 1995-1999); monthly published compilations of publicity news clippings; St. Philip's Normal and Industrial School reports (1925); files on faculty and staff, faculty development; Faculty Senate and celebrity visits; books and dissertations of faculty (3 linear ft.); scholarship essays, programs and news clippings pertaining to the alumni. College history materials include: "St. Philip's College: a case study of a historical black two-year college", by C.W. Jones, Jr. (1975); History of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, San Antonio, Texas, 1895-1985, by Milbrew Davis (1986); draft of "History of St. Philip's College" by B.J. Maroscher (1999). Also reports, policies and procedures, unit plans, accreditation and self-study reports, Association of College and Research Library standards, collection assessments and development papers, patron and collection statistics, correspondence, photographs, and other materials pertaining to the St. Philip's College Learning Resources Center (1977-1998 and undated, 7 linear ft.). Also include materials pertaining to St. Philip's Church such as baptisms, confirmations, and memberships (1888-1902); and conference proceedings, programs, handouts, group photograph and other miscellaneous materials pertaining to the National Association of Collegiate Deans and Registrars (1945-1967, 0.5 linear ft.)

St. Philip's College was founded as St. Philip's Vocational Day School for Colored Children in 1898 (also known as St. Philip's Parochial Day School) in connection with St. Philip's Church. Under the leadership of Episcopalian Bishop James Steptoe Johnson, the school opened on 1 Mar. 1898 as a sewing class for girls, with fewer than twenty students.
